On the third episode of Uncharted: Your Sidekick for Life Podcast, we had the pleasure of speaking with Heather Wagner Reed, the founder and CEO of Juice Consulting, a premier marketing and PR firm based in Austin, Texas. Heather’s firm specializes in various industries, including music, film, tech, and international government. Her career is marked by collaborations with iconic artists like Gloria Gaynor, Erykah Badu, and Beyoncé. Before founding Juice Consulting, Heather managed global marketing for Beyoncé, bringing extensive international experience in the music industry. Today, she also shares her expertise as an adjunct professor at Austin Community College, where she inspires students in marketing and PR for creatives.
The central question we explored with Heather was: “How did she do it?”
Heather’s journey is a testament to the power of relationships and mentorship. Reflecting on her career, she shared, “I’ve had a lot of people reach out their hand to me through moments of my life and really pull me along to the next level, through mentorship and other means.”
Throughout her career, Heather has been surrounded by a network of mentors, colleagues, and friends who have helped her navigate the complexities of the PR and marketing world. She emphasized how these relationships have not only propelled her forward but also instilled in her a strong desire to give back. “The more and more I’ve had growth in my career and success,” she explained, “I feel the more I want to give back as well… it gives me great joy to put those resources with those in need.”
Heather’s journey in the music industry is particularly inspiring. A pivotal moment came when she was at a conference in Atlanta, where a chance conversation led to a life-changing opportunity. “I happened to be sitting next to someone who worked for Matthew Knowles, who was a keynote speaker,” Heather recounted. This encounter eventually led to her being hired to manage global marketing for Destiny’s Child and later, for Beyoncé as she launched her solo career. “It was life-changing,” she said, reflecting on the experience of working closely with one of the world’s most influential artists.
This story highlights a crucial lesson: you never know where a conversation might lead. Heather’s openness to new opportunities and her willingness to connect with others played a significant role in her success. As she put it, “You just don’t even know who’s sitting next to you.”
Heather’s passion for mentorship extends beyond her career. As an adjunct professor, she guides the next generation of creatives, helping them navigate the challenges of marketing and PR. She also fosters a sense of community within her firm, emphasizing the importance of creating a supportive environment where everyone can thrive. “I hire people based on personality,” she said, “and then I train them up in their positions… It’s complete gut feeling and instinct.”
Heather’s story shows the power of community and mentorship in action. Her success is not just a result of her hard work but also the collective support of those around her. By building solid relationships and staying open to new opportunities, Heather has created a career that fulfills her and allows her to give back to others.
For anyone looking to follow a similar path, Heather’s advice is clear: be open, be curious, and always be willing to reach out. As she noted, “The hardest part of being young is knowing how you will change the world… but to some extent, mentorship is that answer.”
