“There’s nothing worse than not making a difference.”

updated on 06 September 2024

The role of women in society has transformed dramatically over the years, evolving from rigid expectations to a more inclusive recognition of women’s diverse capabilities and contributions. For much of history, women were confined to specific roles, often centered around domestic responsibilities or professions deemed appropriate for their gender. However, trailblazers like Molly Beth Malcolm have been pivotal in challenging these norms, opening doors for future generations, and setting powerful examples of what women can achieve.

In the mid-20th century, societal expectations for women were narrow and limiting. Women were primarily expected to take on roles as teachers, nurses, or homemakers — professions seen as extensions of their natural caregiving roles. While these careers were undoubtedly valuable, they offered limited opportunities for advancement or leadership. Women like Molly, who grew up in East Texas, were often funneled into these paths, with little encouragement to explore beyond them.

Molly’s initial career choice as an elementary school teacher was very much in line with what society expected of women at the time. Teaching, though noble, was one of the few careers where women could work outside the home while still adhering to societal norms. However, as society began to change, so too did the opportunities available to women — and pioneers like Molly were quick to seize them.

“I’ve always felt like I was on a trapeze… Take that [opportunity] and see where it goes,” Molly reflects, encapsulating her journey of embracing new opportunities as they came.

Over the decades, the feminist movement and societal shifts gradually expanded the roles available to women, allowing them to enter fields previously dominated by men, such as politics, business, and higher education. But this shift wasn’t without challenges. Women entering these fields often had to work twice as hard to prove themselves, facing both overt discrimination and subtler forms of bias.

Molly’s career is a testament to this shift. After starting as a teacher, she transitioned into counseling, a role that allowed her to have a more direct impact on individuals’ lives. But it was her unexpected move into politics that marked a significant departure from the traditional roles expected of women in her generation. Becoming the first and only woman to serve as the Texas Democratic Party Chair was not just a personal achievement for Molly; it was a significant milestone for women in leadership. Her success demonstrated that women could excel in areas traditionally reserved for men, paving the way for others to follow.

“If you really want to make a difference, you’ve got to be involved. You have to figure out how the system works.”

Trailblazers like Molly are essential in the ongoing fight for gender equality. By stepping into roles traditionally excluded to women, they challenge societal norms and prove that women are capable of achieving greatness in any field. Molly’s success in politics and higher education serves as a beacon for younger generations of women, showing them that they do not have to be confined by the expectations of others.

Moreover, Molly’s story highlights the importance of mentorship and support networks in helping women navigate these challenging paths. Much of her success, she notes, came from the guidance and mentorship she received — often from men who recognized her potential and supported her ambitions. This underscores the vital role of allies in the quest for gender equality and the importance of breaking down barriers together.

“It is amazing if you will listen to the stories that others will tell you about, maybe how they dealt with something. And maybe it’s not the exact thing, but you can learn from that.”

While significant progress has been made, the journey toward true gender equality is ongoing. Women like Molly have laid the groundwork, but there is still much to be done to ensure that women have equal opportunities and are fairly represented in all areas of society. This means not only creating more opportunities for women but also challenging and changing the cultural narratives that continue to limit women’s potential.
